Dr. Sreevalsa Among 50 Influential Global Civil Engineering Thought Leaders
Dr. Sreevalsa Kolathayar, Associate Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) Surathkal, has been featured in the prestigious global list of “50 Influential Thought Leaders in Civil Engineering – 2026” curated by Jonno White (Australia), a globally recognised leadership consultant, author, and host of the Leadership Conversations Podcast.
The recognition places Dr. Sreevalsa Kolathayar among leading international experts and practitioners shaping the future of civil engineering across areas such as climate resilience, sustainable infrastructure, transportation, water systems, disaster risk reduction, digital transformation, and geotechnical engineering.
Importantly, NITK Surathkal and IIT Delhi are the only two Indian institutions represented in this global Top 50 list.
In introducing the list, Jonno White highlighted the critical role of civil engineering in shaping human existence, stating that every road, bridge, tunnel, levee, water main, and stormwater system reflects civil engineering decisions that directly influence society and communities. He further noted that while civil engineers profoundly shape the modern world, many of the profession’s most important thinkers remain among the least visible public intellectuals globally.
The list was curated not as a compilation of historical personalities, but as a recognition of “living voices actively building the profession’s next chapter.” The selection deliberately moved beyond commonly featured names and focused on professionals across six continents who are actively publishing, researching, speaking, mentoring, advocating, and influencing the future direction of civil engineering practice and policy.
Dr. Sreevalsa Kolathayar has been featured under Category 4: “Water, Environment and Climate Resilience” for his contributions in earthquake geotechnical engineering, disaster risk reduction, liquefaction hazard assessment, landslide studies, and sustainable infrastructure research.
He has been listed together with globally recognised experts including Pedro J.J. Alvarez (Rice University, USA), Costa Samaras (Carnegie Mellon University and former White House OSTP Advisor), Dipak Gyawali (Nepal Water Conservation Foundation), Paul Chinowsky (University of Colorado Boulder), Dr Priya Parikh (Imperial College London), Jayantha Obeysekera (Florida International University), and Arthur Antoine.
The article also acknowledges Dr. Kolathayar’s active engagement in international research collaborations, conferences, and dissemination of innovative engineering solutions related to sustainability and resilience. His work particularly addresses the challenges faced by rapidly urbanising and hazard-prone regions, with emphasis on resilience-oriented engineering solutions for complex geological and climatic conditions.
This recognition reflects the growing global visibility of NITK Surathkal’s contributions to advanced research and innovation in sustainable civil engineering.
